Description
Leader for the Maintenance Department and a member of the Extended Site Leadership Team, this role will develop and drive strategic direction for people and processes. The purpose of the Maintenance Department is to perform quality field execution of proactive and reactive maintenance activities. The Manager creates and upholds the Maintenance Vision & Purpose, and the department's organizational structure, people competency/training and management of contractors. 

The Manager ensures healthy interfaces with the main customer and executors (Production Department, Maintenance Excellence Department) and other departments such as Engineering and Technology within Sarnia Manufacturing. The Manager has overall responsibility for the Maintenance Processes and Controls to assure quality and safety of work in a repeatable manner.

The functions within Maintenance include:

  • Area Maintenance - Perform Maintenance Execution within assigned Process Areas.
  • Support Maintenance - Provide the Front-End Work for preparation of Maintenance Execution and provide support for our systems as well as assurance.
  • Central Maintenance - Provide Support to Maintenance Execution from a centralized resource pool of Contractors (i.e. Manage Contractors that do not report to the Process Area teams)
  • Major Maintenance - Manage the Execution of complex or long duration Maintenance activities

Accountabilities:

  • Accountable for the Leadership and Management of the entire Maintenance organization
  • Owner of the Maintenance Ways of Working Manual and overall department governance in the form of Vision/Mission/Purpose.
  • Accountable for all policies and procedures within Maintenance. 
  • Responsible for development of the yearly Maintenance Plan, in collaboration with the other departments
  • Accountable for the structure of the Maintenance Organization tree, and overall accountability for roles and responsibilities within the Maintenance Team
  • Accountable for overall Job Competency Profiles for Maintenance people and associated training
  • Requirements
  • Responsible for personnel development program within Maintenance, with special focus on continuous personal development of direct-report leaders and extended-leaders within the Maintenance Team
  • Responsible for department communication effectiveness within the entire team, including maintenance interface groups with the front line. 
  • Accountable for apprenticeship program within Maintenance Accountable for the Maintenance Execution Process within Sarnia
  • Owner of the Standard and Work Preparation, Scheduling Execution process. Accountable for performing health check and assurance review program for the ME process, driving Continuous Improvement program
  • Accountable for the Computerized Maintenance Management System regarding work preparation, scheduling and execution. Accountable for CMFT process (updating, and managing Site SAP master data)
  • Accountable for information management within the Maintenance organization
  • Overall accountability for health and safety of the entire Maintenance team. Providing Visible Safety Leadership and driving safety leadership to all Maintenance leaders
  • Accountable for behavior-based safety program and other proactive HSSE programs to ensure visible
  • and felt field engagement and collation/analysis of leading indicators
  • Providing incident management and assurance of embedding learnings back into the organization 
  • Budget Owner for the Maintenance Department, with high cost focus on work-site efficiencies and hand-on-tool time.

Functions include:

Weekly and monthly reviews of spent against Budget and developing forecast and driving accountability down the line

Month end accruals and developing accurate Latest Estimate (LE). Developing a cost focused team. Collaboration with Production department and other departments on cost challenge and overall site LE.

Requirements

Special Challenges:

  • Nurturing membership of Leadership Team as "first team" in relation to own Maintenance Team.
  • Managing Safety and Environmental aspects of maintenance related activities
  • Delivering maintenance improvements while also delivering operational excellence 
  • Establishing continuous improvement targets that may not be readily accepted
  • Supporting Maintenance, Turnaround and Engineering contracting strategies
  • Maintaining critical interfaces with: CP, Engineering, Production, Turnarounds, Projects, Technology, Finance,
  • HSSE for both departmental activities and work processes
  • Defining the expected working relationship between Production, site Projects, Technical Assurance, Engineering
  • and Technology and Maintenance teams
  • Delivery strategic direction for site turnarounds as part of the turnaround strategy committee (TASC)
  • Change management and leadership to ensure successful implementation of changes required to be competitive

 
Requirements:

  • Engineer, Technologist or Journeyman
  • 10 + years relevant Maintenance and Operations experience preferred Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Engineering. Experienced in leading multi-disciplinary teams and leading craft team members
  • Demonstrated HSSE leadership
  • Excellent Leadership, influencing and negotiating skills, coupled with diagnostic and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with Computerized Maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Strong interpersonal skills as this role interfaces regularly with Engineering, Production, CP and Turnaround
  • Can manage evolving priorities and deliver on multiple commitments in a timely manner.
