Description
With over 100 years of experience, EPCOR Water Canada works with industry, municipalities and communities to design, build, finance and operate water and wastewater treatment plants, distribution and collection systems. We serve more than 85 communities and industrial sites in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan, making sure that the water exceeds public health, environmental and industrial requirements.

EPCOR has one (1) temporary full time position available for up to 8 months!

Reporting to the Manager, Water Lab Operations, the Laboratory Technologist is accountable for:

  • Analyzing water, wastewater, industrial, etc. samples for various analytical parameters.
  • Collecting samples from plant processes at EPCOR Water Treatment facilities or other locations as directed by the Team Lead and/or Manager, Water Lab Operations.
  • Receiving samples and entering sample data into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Performing daily and weekend duties as directed by the Team Lead within the context and prescribed limits of the Manager, Water Lab Operations.
  • Performing routine maintenance and calibrating equipment and instruments.
  • Preparing various stock solutions, materials, reagents and quality control solutions for assigned analyses.
  • Performing housekeeping duties as required, such as washing laboratory glassware, cleaning benches, putting away glassware, etc.
  • Performing related duties as directed by the Team Lead; Manager, Water Lab Operations or other senior laboratory personnel.  This may include assisting technical staff with equipment preparation, errands, data entry, etc.
  • Monitoring, measuring and reporting performance metrics. This may involve analyzing and identifying issues impacting operational performance, ensuring data meets appropriate quality control limits and taking appropriate corrective actions if not.
  • Following all laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Following all EPCOR policies including workplace safety policies, Respectful Workplace, Ethics, Acceptable Use, etc.
Requirements

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary diploma in Chemistry, Biology, or Environmental Studies (or a subset of these) from a recognized educational institution such as NAIT or SAIT. 
  • 0-3 years of directly related work experience, including some laboratory experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
  • Strong mathematical and problem solving capabilities.
  • Willing and able to complete the following:
    • Perform repetitive tasks with dexterity to manipulate delicate equipment
    • Work in a laboratory setting with wastewater and industrial samples
    • Wear half-mask respirators
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License (with 6 demerits or less).
    • A Driver Abstract will be required.
  • Standard First Aid (CPR Level A and/or Automated External Defibrillation training) will be considered an asset.
  • Able to meet the physical demands of the position (able to stand for up to 75% of the day; able to carry up to 20kg/45lbs). Clearance on pre-placement medical and drug and alcohol testing may be required.
  • The successful candidate must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Class: T1

Wage: $33.41 - $39.87 per hour
Hours of work: 7.5 per day, 37.5 per week, Monday to Sunday

Location: Rossdale Water Treatment Plant

  • If you are considered for the position, clearance on all applicable background checks (which may include criminal, identity, educational, and/or credit) and professional reference checks is required. Some EPCOR positions require an enhanced level of background assessment, which is dictated by law.  These positions require advanced criminal record checks that must also be conducted from time to time after commencement of employment.
  • A technical/practical assessment may be administered during the selection process and this exercise will be used as a part of the selection criterion.
